Merlin’s Magic Wand
3rd May 2017
Merlin’s Magic Wand has teamed up with SEA LIFE Weymouth to give a complete redesign and rejuvenation to Westfield School’s garden.
Westfield School is a complex specialist needs school which caters for children with severe and complex learning difficulties and disabilities from ages 4-19. Most of the children are unable to visit our attractions due to their specialist needs.
The objective of creating a new sensory space for the children will be to provide magical and immersive, hands on experience beaming with amazing discoveries for all the children. Children learn through play and by combining elements of SEA LIFE throughout, it will ensure that every child experiences a magical day, every day if they are unable to visit our attractions.
The children use outdoor spaces a lot as they struggle to cope in classrooms and enclosed spaces. The new garden will be transformed into a self-guided sensory learning garden.
The General Manager from SEA LIFE said “We have worked with Westfield School closely over the past year or so and after visiting their school a couple of times this year, we really wanted to bring SEA LIFE and “Amazing Discoveries” to the children by transforming a space they don’t currently use. Some of the children are not fortunate enough to be able to visit us so we really want to bring the magic to them.”
Merlin’s Magic Wand made sure that all the requirements of the school were incorporated into the designs to make sure the new space is functional, fun and magical. Integrating the SEA LIFE theme means the children get to experience the magic or Merlin whilst still in their school environment.
Laura Bell Charity Champion for SEA LIFE Weymouth said “A few of the children from Westfield School launched our brand new sensory signage earlier in the year and it was so magical to accompany them around the aquarium. We’re hoping this new space will inspire learning, create a space that will be enjoyed by everyone and for children to use their imagination.”
The team set to work to create the new garden and the results were amazing.
Jenny Savage, Business School Manager said “We are delighted that through their charity, Merlin’s Magic Wand, a team of staff from SEA LIFE Weymouth transformed a final piece of unused ground beside the playground into a sensory area for the pupils. They have created a seaside themed area with a shady pergola, seating, sensory plants and musical instruments. The children have been eagerly watching as this area has been transformed and couldn’t wait for the temporary fencing to come down. We are truly grateful to the Charity for this wonderful final touch to our play area.”
