Merlin’s Magic Wand
21st August 2017
Merlin’s Magic Wand has teamed up with SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast to give a complete redesign and rejuvenation of a rundown and underused play and storage area into something truly magical for the children to enjoy.
SunnyKids operates Najidah, the region’s domestic and family violence refuge for women and children requiring emergency accommodation. The local Sunshine Coast charity make sure the families are safe, have food, shelter and the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The charity believes everyone deserves a fair chance; therefore they work tirelessly to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and disadvantage. Too many kids today simply aren’t getting a realistic chance to be the best that they can be. The Sunshine Coast community alone identifies 5,000 at risk children every year. In response SunnyKids provides thousands of nights of emergency accommodation, and they partner with health, education and child protection agencies to keep these kids safe.
SunnyKids Vision is: "A society, in which everyone feels safe, belongs and has a chance to reach their full potential."
“Having a Merlin’s Magic Spaces area designated for Sunny Kids will not only provide a safe environment for the children to interact but also provide a therapeutic area in which the children can play and interact with others while developing much needed social and behavioral skills.
Imagination and play time is a critical factor in a child’s development and helps to build much needed life skills as the child grows. Merlin’s Magic Spaces will also encourage interaction between the families. It will also help overall to help increase development and healthy family bonding time. “
MMW has worked closely with Sunny Kids to make sure we create a bespoke usable space that the children will thrive in, taking into account all their needs when designing the play area.
The counselling room will be used as distraction therapy for the under 5’s, this will enable mum to get the time she needs while the children play. Many children who are traumatised express themselves through art and creativity; this makes the creative elements in the room even more important. We have made sure to incorporate as many as possible.
This room leads out to a deck, which is themed around the fresh water area in the SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast.
Children who have witnessed or experienced domestic and family violence face a trauma that is difficult to manage. In refuge many families come together for comfort and reach out to each other and the community in order to achieve a common goal of providing a safe and nurturing environment for themselves and their families. Children who have been exposed to domestic and family violence face many challenges in regards to social and behavioral interaction.
For these sensitive reasons we are unable to disclose the location of the refuge
This new space will facilitate learning, bonding, safe play and time together.
