Merlin’s Magic Wand
18th January 2019
Merlin’s Magic Wand and LEGOLAND® Billund have joined forces to work their magic and transform a dated corridor area with plain bay seating areas within the Aarhus hospital into a much needed NEW creative play adventure space for all to enjoy. The Merlin’s Magic Spaces make-over took the original featureless area and transformed it into three different exciting and inspiring LEGOLAND® Billund themed areas. This new space has created the opportunity for the children to immerse themselves in the stimulating role play world of a DUPLO jungle, LEGO Pirates and underwater adventures.
As the busy hospital is always in use the design and operations of the new play space had to incorporate certain aspects to keep it as a functional area whist still bringing the magic of Merlin to the children. One of the main criteria which had to be considered was for a hospital bed to be able to pass through the area at all times.
Aarhus University Hospital offers specialised treatment to citizens in the Central Denmark Region and other regions in Denmark. The University Hospital is now the largest hospital in the area and among the biggest in Europe. The department of paediatrics and adolescent medicine treats children aged from 0-18. The department has the capacity for between 40-50 beds and will also cater for walk-in patients and visiting families. All these children needed a safe, fun area where they can relax and play, distracting them from the daily routine of treatments and procedures.
The LEGOLAND® themed areas are a perfect fit for the Aarhus University Hospital. The corridor bay areas which were previously unused will now provide many hours of creative play and distraction for the paediatric patients and their families. The beaming smiles on the faces of the children when they were first introduced to the new play area said it all. They were all so excited to see Olli who was the star guest visiting specially for the opening all the way from LEGOLAND®. The feedback on the launch and the play areas has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Being able to invite our young patients to play is very important for us; however, it is not the easiest thing to make a hospital a place full of fun, when you are ill and having a difficult time. Therefore this gift to our hospital means a lot to us and is very much appreciated. It gives the children the possibility of visiting their own LEGOLAND®, while they are in hospital” said medical director Jørgen Schøler Kristensen.
Special thanks to Susanne Molgard Blom, Tom Christensen, Jens Bachman and Christian Woller who made this project possible.
Alone we can do a little, together we have achieved a lot!
