In a moving display of teamwork and compassion, Alton Towers Resort recently came together to deliver a truly unforgettable day for a young father, Stuart, who is facing a life-limiting diagnosis.
Determined to make lasting memories with his two daughters, Aria and Leah, and their grandfather, Gary, Stuart was invited to the Resort for a bespoke Magical Day Out, created in collaboration with children’s charity Merlin’s Magic Wand.
Led by Guest Experience Manager Abbie Davies, who skillfully coordinated teams across the Resort, the day was designed to offer more than just fun. It aimed to provide something deeply meaningful - an experience the family could hold close. With involvement from Admissions, Entertainment, the Hotel, VIP Services, Sharkbait Reef, Retail, Restaurants, and many more, every moment was thoughtfully planned and tailored to suit the children’s ages, interests, and the family’s needs.
Their visit began bright and early at 8:50 AM with a full VIP itinerary. From personalised goody bags and front-of-line access to their favourite rides, to a private tour with a dedicated VIP host and a complimentary digital photo pass, every detail was carefully considered. Nothing was left to chance.
One of the standout moments came from VIP Host Nathan Moran, whose warmth and attentiveness brought real comfort to the family throughout the day. “Nathan was wonderful, he was very welcoming and there if we needed anything,” Stuart shared.
Another highlight came courtesy of Sales & Admissions Assistant Manager Yaz Humphries, who introduced a brand-new tradition by inviting the family to lead the park’s morning countdown and open the gates. For Aria and Leah, it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment to feel truly special. “Being asked to do the countdown to the park opening was a moment that will be remembered,” Stuart reflected.
Later, at Sharkbait Reef, the family was treated to a marine-themed VIP experience thanks to the kindness and creativity of team members Amy, Natasha, and Jordan. It was one of the most heartfelt parts of the day. “What might have felt like a small act to them was massive to us,” Stuart said, expressing deep gratitude for the care and connection shown throughout their visit.
While Merlin’s Magic Wand provides up to £500 per family to help cover accommodation, travel, food, and souvenirs, this Enhanced Visit at Alton Towers showed that the real magic comes from the people who bring it all to life. Many team members gave their time freely or used their volunteer days to be involved, offering not just support, but their hearts.
This extraordinary effort from Alton Towers is a true reflection of Merlin’s Magic Wand’s mission—to create joyful experiences for children facing serious challenges. Thanks to Abbie Davies and every team member who played a part, Stuart and his family were given a day filled with laughter, love, and light at a time they needed it most.
